High in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft), lies Kedarnath Temple, one of the most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and perched on the banks of the Mandakini River, Kedarnath isn’t just a place — it’s a spiritual odyssey, a test of devotion, and a destination that calls out to seekers from across the world.
Kedarnath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India and the most remote among them. It is also one of the four sacred sites of the Char Dham Yatra (along with Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri), and part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit.
Believed to be built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, this stone temple has withstood the test of time — earthquakes, floods, and snowstorms.
According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness for their sins. Shiva, avoiding them, took refuge in Kedarnath disguised as a bull. When Bhima tried to catch him, Shiva dived into the ground, leaving behind his hump, which is worshipped in the form of a lingam at Kedarnath.
The remaining parts of his body appeared in different places, forming the Panch Kedar — Tungnath (arms), Rudranath (face), Madhyamaheshwar (navel), and Kalpeshwar (hair).

Ponies, palkis (palanquins), or helicopters (from Phata, Guptkashi, Sersi, or Sitapur)
Open Season: Late April/early May to mid-November (temple remains closed during winter)
Ideal Months: May–June and September–October
Avoid: Monsoon season (July–August) due to landslides
Darshan Timings: 4:00 AM to 9:00 PM (with breaks)
Morning rituals begin with Maha Abhishek, and evening aarti is a deeply moving experience.

When the temple closes in winter, the idol of Lord Kedarnath is shifted to Ukhimath, where it is worshipped for six months. Despite harsh weather, the priests and locals maintain age-old traditions, ensuring that Lord Shiva is never alone.

Vasuki Tal: A glacial lake around 8 km from Kedarnath — ideal for trekkers.
