🌱 Travelochat
Deep inside the rain-soaked forests of Meghalaya, nature and human wisdom come together to form one of the world’s most fascinating creations — the Living Root Bridges.
These bridges, made by training the roots of ancient rubber trees (Ficus elastica), are living structures that grow stronger with time instead of decaying.
Found mostly in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, these bridges are not only functional but also symbols of harmony between people and nature — a masterpiece of bio-engineering that takes decades to grow!
🌿 The Story Behind the Living Root Bridges
Centuries ago, the Khasi and Jaintia tribes discovered that the aerial roots of rubber trees could be guided across streams using bamboo scaffolds. Over time, the roots intertwined, thickened, and formed strong bridges capable of carrying people across rivers and gorges.
Unlike man-made bridges, these living wonders get stronger with age, lasting for over 500 years!
